FACILITIES
Our track can be found to the rear of the Whissendine sports club's field on Melton Road in Whissendine. The site is approximately an acre in size and currently hosts two tracks, small carriage store, club house and steaming bays.
The raised track (yellow line on the plan) has rails set at 5 inch, 3.5 inch and 2.5 inch gauges and has a separate steaming rail alongside. This track is pretty much level all the way around and stands isolated from the main ground level circuit.

The Ground level track (red line on the plan) is currently around 1150 feet in length and has rails set at 5 inch and 7.25 inch gauge. The steaming bays have 6 roads with 2 exclusively for 7.25 inch gauge, access is via traverser from the loading ramp. There is a supply of rainwater on site but no provision for steam raising blower power supply. Once steam is raised then the loco can be backed down in to the station platform nearest the club house, there is a water tower here for replenishing your tanks. On departing the station you are almost immediately starting to climb past the steaming bays and over the small access crossing and in to the trees at the back of the site, rounding this second corner the line levels out along the back straight and runs parallel with the raised track. Here the line crosses to the outside on a diamond crossover heading towards the bridge. Once under the bridge the gradient starts to fall down to the level crossing. Here speed must be checked on approach and you continue past the station area on the outside line. From here you continue behind the laurel hedge, climbing again and round the corner to the diamond crossing where you then switch back to the inside line. Again you approach the level crossing where speed must be checked on the approach and on to the facing point and a choice made as to whether to enter the station or continue past on the middle "bypass" line to start another lap on the inside track.

The line may not be long but a couple of laps are enough to keep people on their toes when running with other traffic. We have a laid back approach to running days with many members often parking up in a siding and breaking for a cup of tea and a bacon cob in our new clubhouse. In here we have full kitchen facilities and a log burner for those colder days with ample seating and patio doors for the summer months. Perfect for a summer evening steam up and barbeque!
THE FUTURE
The small band of members who have extended the length of the ground level track are continuing to improve our facilities with Friday working parties. A new unloading facility has been installed and needs finishing touches, as does our new disabled access toilet. Further changes to the steaming bays, carriage sheds, solar powered lights and fridge are also planned, along with an improved raised track steaming bay. These projects are funding dependent and will run concurrently with the ongoing tidy up of our existing site, including more planting and grassed areas and will hopefully improve the experience for both our members and visitors for years to come.
If you are interested in coming along to join us and help with any of our projects then please do not hesitate to get in touch or pop along to one of our friendly monthly meets. There really is something for everyone!
